First attempt at darning: an old cashmere turtleneck done with contrasting darning yarn

darn

July 03, 2023 in projects

Everybody knows what to do when life hands you lemons (answer: throw them back at life’s head and tell it to bring you some proper lemonade). But what do you do when life hands you a sweater that has holes in it? You can’t throw a hole. I suppose you could throw the sweater, but it’s so soft and cozy and it just wants to be loved …

I can do basic sewing, and thankfully the Internet exists for when you want to try something that’s a bit more complicated. I also like the idea of making repairs parts of things and visible as opposed to trying to hide them. Yes, I’m American, but no, I’m not a big fan of pretending that fixing things is bad. So I attempted to darn the holes on this sweater with contrasting yarn, uncharacteristically (for me) pinks and reds. It turned out alright —not quite to the standards of the people with the YouTube videos, but not bad for a first-timer. The holes won’t be getting bigger anyhow; I get to keep wearing it; it continues to be loved.

So what do you do when life hands you a sweater that has holes in it? Darn that sweater!
